EMILY (Prairie Roses Collection V - Book 26) by Author Nancy Fraser

Welcome to Romance Sweet Reads. Today, we want to share the third book in this year's Prairie Rose Collection, and the twenty-sixth book over all since the Collection started five years ago.

Emily, by Author Nancy Fraser is today's featured book. Join us for a sneak peek.

Newly graduated teacher Emily Prentiss has been granted an interview for a position in the small town of Barkerville, Oregon. In order to reach her destination, she takes on the job of governess for a wealthy family’s four children and agrees to travel with them by wagon train to Oregon City.

Miles Grainger owns the largest apple orchard on the west coast. He’s spent the past month in St. Louis attending to the estate of his late brother and sister-in-law. While he’s anxious to return to Oregon, he’s also overwhelmed by the added responsibility as guardian of his niece and nephew. While he knows everything about trees and fruit, he’s totally clueless about being a parent.

Despite her duties as nanny to her employer’s children, Emily offers to help Miles weather the problems he faces on the trail with two small children. Will their friendship develop into more during their time on the trail? And, once they reach their destination, will she be willing to give up her dream of teaching to become a wife and ready-make mother?

While he waited, Miles changed Peregrine’s nappy, disposing of the stinky part in the nearby pile of horse dung. Bottom wiped, he fashioned the weird shaped flannel cloth around the baby’s rump, and folded in the edges, just as Mable Parker had taught him during his first week in Saint Louis. Drawing a breath, he thumbed open this new-fangled contraption Mable had called a ‘safety pin’ and proceeded to anchor the edges.

“Ouch!”

From her seat on the driver’s bench, Periwinkle giggled.

He drew the pin back, ready to try again, when a soft voice at his side asked, “Do you need some help with that?”

Miles looked up into the huge brown eyes, and timid smile belonging to the famous storyteller, Miss Emily. “Yes, please. I think I have the folding part right, but these pins should be outlawed.”

“They are a wonderful, and time-saving, invention. However, they do take a bit of practice to master. Here,” she said, stepping forward. “Allow me.”

He stepped back, and handed her the tiny weapon, grateful the baby was in a docile mood, rather than his usual flailing arms and legs.

"You’re very adept at that,” he said. “You’ve obviously had your share of practice.”

She gave a small shrug of her narrow shoulders, and admitted, “Not really. This trip is my first as a governess. I do a lot of sewing. Pins are not that different from needles.” After tightening the wrap of the cloth, she slid the pin effortlessly through and locked it in place. “Do you have some soaker pants to go over his nappy?”

“Probably somewhere back in the wagon. We’ve been going pretty much bare legs because of the heat.”

“As long as you’re keeping him out of direct sunlight, I’d say he probably enjoys the light weight.” Once she’d laid the baby back in his basket, she stuck out her hand, and said, “My name is Emily Prentiss.”

“I’m Miles Grainger,” he said. “Thank you for your help.”

“Miles,” she said softly. “It’s nice to finally put a name to a face, rather than just think of you as Periwinkle’s father.”

“Oh, he’s not my father,” Periwinkle said from her perch on the bench. “My papa went to live with the angels. My mama, too.”

Miles waited for the tears to come, and was pleasantly surprised when they didn’t.

“I’m so sorry to hear that, Periwinkle... Mister Grainger.”

“It was unexpected,” he explained. “Especially the part where my brother chose me to be their guardian.”

JO by Author Caryl McAdoo **Book Birthday** **Prairie Roses Collection 2022**

Well, here we are. The last book of the 2022 Prairie Roses Collection has finally arrived. JO, by Prairie Roses leader/guru, Author Caryl McAdoo is our featured story today.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He will direct your path!

An evil tragedy upends Jo's young life. Sickness propels the young lady and her grandfather from the thick, moisture-laden air of the Mississippi to drier desert land at the end of the Santa Fe Trail. Her life-long beau professes his love from the banks of the muddy river, but Papa is her whole life, and she's determined to keep him alive.

Along the way, suitors and adventures are aplenty. How is a stubborn girl who always knows what's best supposed to choose when the one she likes best is constantly rubbing her the wrong way? Could things be any more difficult? Has she made a huge mistake?

You can find Jo exclusively on Kindle Unlimited

Chapter One
March 15, 1840 Five miles outside of Memphis, Tennessee

The wagon rounded a curve. Right there on the side of the road, a herd of goats nibbled on the little trees and grass and weeds along the fence. “Pa, may I have a kid of my own? Please.”

“You’ll have to ask your Papa, Jo.” Her father could never tell her no, but Papa might. The goats belong to him and Mima.”

“A kid is a lot of responsibility, honey.” Her mother gave her a look that said if Papa agreed, she wouldn’t object. “Maybe it would be better to wait until you’re a little older.”

Jolene looked from her father to her mother. “But I’m six now! I’ll take good care of a baby goat, especially if she’s all mine! She can sleep with me and everything. Please, Ma?”

“Sweetheart, your father said to ask Papa.”

“All right, I will! And if he says yes, then I can have one? How much farther is it, Pa?”

“A mile or so. Their place is just around the next bend in the road. How about being quiet for a while?”

Not talk? That was so hard.

It’d been a long trip, and she’d tried, but there was so much she wanted to know, especially after hearing that very morning about the royal wedding happening just after Pa loaded her and Ma up in the buggy and got on the way!

A new question just burned its way out. “How come Queen Victoria got to marry her cousin? I thought that was against the rules. Don’t they have to follow the same rules as us?”

“Not really, sweetie, but I don’t think they’re first cousins. Second or third cousins aren’t as bad.”

“What number cousins are Queen Victoria and Prince Albert? Why do they still call him prince? Isn’t he a king if he’s married to the queen? It just doesn’t seem right—her being queen and him only a prince.”

“Shhh. I’m not sure, baby. Maybe Mima will know.”

“Is that because she and Papa came from England?”

“I don’t know, honey, but they did come from England. Remember your father asked you to be quiet.”

“Yes, ma’am. I will.” She met her father’s stern eyes and smiled. “Can we go to England someday? I’d love to see the Queen.”

Award-winning, Christian author Caryl McAdoo prays her story brings God glory. Of her best-selling novels, readers love her historical Christian romance family sagas most, but also enjoy her Christian contemporary romances, Biblical fiction stories, new mystery series, and tales for young adults and mid-grade booklovers. The prolific writer loves singing the new songs God gives her almost as much as penning new novels—hear a few at YouTube! She’s been married to Ron fifty-three years, and they share four children and twenty-one grandsugars. The McAdoos live in the woods south of Clarksville, seat of Red River County in far Northeast Texas, waiting expectantly for God to open the next door.

AMY by Author Angela Lain **Book Birthday** **Prairie Roses Collection 2022**

Welcome to today’s edition of Romance Sweet Reads. It’s a bittersweet post as we’re featuring Amy, the 11th book in this year’s Prairie Roses Collection by the late Angela Lain. We lost Angela just weeks short of the release of this book and owe a special thank you to her family and to our Prairie Roses organizer, Caryl McAdoo, for bringing this last book of Angela’s to fruition.

Amy was the oldest surviving daughter of the Morrin family. Since they had fled Ireland in search of a better life she had always know they were only a few steps ahead of destitution. The Oregon Trail spelt more freedom than Amy had ever known, but arrival in Fort Laramie brought heartache. Faced with abandoning his dream, Mr. Morrin accepted the offer of restocking the wagon in return for Amy’s hand in marriage to a man of his own age.

Saddle-maker Callum Voisin had other ideas. During these first weeks on the trail, he had got to know, and appreciate, Amy. He would not allow this to happen. So, he made his move!

Amy is available exclusively on Kindle Unlimited

Chapter One
Spring 1848 St. Joseph, Missouri

Amy Morrin always tried her very best to follow the words of the good book and to love, honor and obey her parents. There was no denying that she loved them, but she didn’t always understand her Da. He was a notional man, much inclined to follow sudden impulses; for the last few years Amy had started to believe that he didn’t consider the consequences of his actions. Da believed he was right, always, and the family had to follow him in everything.

At her now advanced age of eighteen, Amy had to admit that this last move had been correct, leaving Indiana had been necessary. Da had said that place was cursed, Amy would not argue with that idea.

When they first left Ireland back in 1844, she had wondered if her Da believed in the Piskies and the Little People. He had uprooted the family and traveled to America, they had been here almost a year when the Big Hunger struck Ireland. She had wondered then if he had known it was coming, certainly his notions had saved the family from starvation. After several months of moving, sleeping in hovels and working for food, they had settled on an abandoned farmstead in Virginia. This had seemed heaven on earth to Amy, after the deprivations of the last few months and the horrors of steerage class on the migrant ship, things had seemed wonderful. But the happiness lasted less than two years; Da didn’t get along with the neighbors in Virginia, so when he heard of the land available in Indiana it seemed another good notion.

It soon became apparent to her father why the good looking piece of level Indiana land he had settled upon had been vacant. It was marshy, and the mosquitoes were rife, they heard of neighbors getting malaria. Then the cow sickened and her milk made the children ill, poor little Niamah, the baby of the family, died. Her father was warned the sickness would not go away, but would kill them all, if the malaria did not get them instead.

Da didn’t hesitate. Less than a year since they had arrived in Indiana, they were on the move again. Since they had moved on both he and her mother, and sometimes her and the boys too, had worked at every opportunity to get some money together for this new venture. They had been living in the wagon for months, joining a wagon train would be no hardship. Already they lived on sourdough bread, with the starter constantly kept going, they churned small quantities of butter, and it churned itself when hung in the moving wagon. They lived off the land they passed through, and sometimes they were hungry. As far as Amy could see, this would be a continuation of that lifestyle.

AMITY by Author Linda Carroll-Bradd **Book Birthday** **Prairie Roses Collection 2022**

We’ve arrived at the tenth book in this year’s Prairie Roses Collection, Amity, by Author Linda Carroll-Bradd. Sit back, relax, and take a peek.
Amity Grenville is set on reaching Oregon’s Sweet Home Valley, where her aunt and uncle have a farm. They were part of the Great Migration of 1843, and Amity saved every letter Aunt Beitris wrote, complete with advice on the journey preparations. Amity is eager for a fresh start, in the hopes that her husband, Garvey, will find a new vocation in farming and leave behind his drinking and gambling ways.

Newly finished with his apprenticeship, blacksmith Shawe Creighton can ply his trade just about anywhere so he agrees to throw in with his best friend’s family on the trek to Oregon. With no family ties, he heads west, thinking Oregon is as good as any place to establish a shop. Fun loving by nature, he’s also looking forward to what the adventure will bring.

In St Joseph doing last-minute preparations for the journey, Amity receives the bad news that Garvey was caught cheating and killed over a poker game. Now men are seeking to claim the wagon and team as their recompense. She barely removes her belongings in time but is faced with either marrying a stranger to comply with the wagon train’s rules or remain behind. Taking pity on her plight, Shawe offers marriage and is immediately faced with her two demands--no drinking or gambling. Intrigued by the outspoken woman, he figures the trip won’t be boring. Will a decision made in haste bring disaster, or will the journey forge bonds neither Amity nor Shawe can imagine?

Amity is available exclusively on Kindle Unlimited

Chapter One
North of St. Joseph, MO, April 1851

The cool spring breeze tugged at her skirts and tossed tendrils of her hair across Amity’s cheeks. She straightened from the boiling pot cooking on her sheet metal stove. Swiping the back of a hand over her cheek, she looked south toward town. Canvas-covered wagons of every shape and size side and free-standing tents blocked her view. Still, she hoped for a glimpse of her dark-haired stocky husband riding closer. Her request had only been for half a peck each of carrots and apples. The errand should have taken no more than an hour, and already, he’d been gone for three.

Relocating to Oregon was the only plan she could think of to change the course of their lives. Five years earlier, when her beloved parents died within weeks of each other, she’d turned to their neighbor, Garvey Grenville, for support. Within a month, they married. Other than he’d lived next door for four years, she’d known few other details about her husband. What she soon learned was Garvey’s habit of jumping from job to job, never lasting more than a few months at each. He always had an excuse about the foreman favoring kin or an older worker having seniority or the boss being a stickler for punctuality. In between jobs, he drank and gambled.

When she caught him collecting her late mère’s silver to be pawned, she gave him an ultimatum—move out of the house she inherited or relocate with her to Oregon. In a letter sent after the funerals, Aunt Beitris suggested Amity might be happier on the farm. She added a postscript that Uncle Tulley would welcome the help of a younger man, but it wasn’t essential to the offer. Since then, Amity used her aunt’s letters home—written on the Great Migration of 1843—as a guide for making journey preparations. Now, only a few more days remained until the wagon master, Captain Samuel Russell, deemed the prairie grass well-established enough. The group of thirty wagons needed a guarantee of feed for the animals before starting the arduous, five-month trek.

As a young girl, I spent lots of my free time lying on my bed reading about fascinating characters having exciting adventures in places far away and in other time periods. In later years, I discovered and devoured family saga stories and romance novels. At a certain point, I grew cocky enough to think I could write one of these stories. Then I learned what a balancing act writing a novel is, but I wasn’t deterred. Twelve years later, my first fiction sale was achieved--a confession story.

After reading Debra Holland’s “Montana Sky” series and Caroline Fyffe’s “Prairie Hearts” series, I wanted to try my hand at historicals. I was thrilled to be invited to contribute to Sweetwater Springs Christmas and continued writing in the Montana Sky world by developing my Entertainers of the West series.

Married with 4 adult children and 2 granddaughters, I now write heartwarming contemporary and historical stories with a touch of humor and a bit of sass from my home in the southern California mountains. Lots of my stories are set in Texas where I lived for a dozen years.

ELSIE by Author KC Hart **Book Birthday** **Prairie Roses Collection 2022**

Today we're celebrating the 9th book in this year's Prairie Roses Collection, Elsie, by Author KC Hart.

When Elsie Kandel's wealthy, doting father dies, leaving her free to make her own choices, along with the finances to see them through, Elsie decides it’s time to prove to herself, and everyone else, that she is more than a porcelain doll in a pretty dress. She will move west to California to live with an estranged aunt and pursue what she has secretly longed to be for as long as she can remember—a midwife.

Dr. Randolph Foster is starting over. After being falsely accused of causing the death of a wealthy man’s child, he loses his medical practice, his reputation, and his fiancĂ©, all in one swoop. Nothing is left for him in Missouri, and when the lucrative offer to accompany two women across the plains to California on a wagon train is made to him, he sees it as an opportunity to begin again.

When the two headstrong travelers are thrown together, each with their plans firmly made, will they bend to a different plan that God has set into motion?

You can find Elsie exclusively on Kindle Unlimited

“There is no doubt in my mind that you are up to the task.” Dr. Foster’s voice did not sound condescending, like he was making fun of her. Elsie strained her eyes to see his face through the shadows of the firelight. Fireflies darted around them, making the night dance in the stillness. “Don’t worry, Miss Elsie. I will be right there beside you until you are confident enough to lead them on your own. You don’t have to be afraid of them.”

“If you promise not to leave me with them, I guess I will try.” Elsie’s heart gave a little tug. Was Dr. Foster actually concerned that she was afraid of the animals? So far, over the past week, he had acted like a general, spouting orders and growling if she didn’t follow them fast enough. Was there an actual human side to the man after all?

“I promise I will stay with you until you can handle the team easily. It is not as hard as you think. The oxen have been trained for years to follow commands and pull the wagons. You are really just there for moral support.” He tossed the last few drops of coffee on the edge of the fire. “I wouldn’t let you do anything that would endanger your life. You are paying me to get you safely to your destination. I wouldn’t be very smart to give you a job that puts you in harm’s way.”

The tender spot in Elsie’s heart turned hard as she listened to the last couple of sentences from the man’s mouth. What was she thinking, anyway? She could care less if the man was concerned about her or not. She was learning to be independent. That was her plan. She would never achieve what she wanted to achieve until she was able to completely stand on her own two feet.

KC lives in Mississippi with her husband of thirty-plus years. She loves to write, read, play piano and guitar, and play with her grandkids.

KC's love of storytelling was nurtured by her large family growing up. She spent a lot of afternoons sitting on the front porch singing while her dad played the guitar. She did a lot of listening and laughing at the tall tales shared by her mother, brothers, or any neighbor who happened to stop by. She is number six of seven kids and admits her older brothers spoiled her rotten.

KC has always had a huge imagination and a love of humor. In her fifties, she finally developed the courage to put these traits in print and fling them to the world.

KC is the author of The Katy Cross Cozy Mystery Series. All the books are clean who-done-its with a Christian worldview and southern, small-town charm.

Aria is available exclusively on Kindle Unlimited

Aria’s breath hitched, and she leaned back briefly, hiding from his view. Only catching snatches of the conversation, her uncle thanked him, and the young man’s face lit up with pride and emotion that resembled longing for something or someone. Uncle John nodded to Trevor, then leaned his head to the side, eyes roving over the grass and to the back of the wagon.

Mary stood with hands on her hips, eyes all a sparkle watching her friend. Aria pushed her hands down the front of her dress and tucked loose strands of hair behind her ear before flipping the long braid over her shoulder. A giggle from behind her caused her to jump, her hand flying to her chest. “No interest in finding a beau, huh?”

“Shh, they’ll hear you.” Aria waved her hand at Mary. Peeking around the side of the wagon to see if the young man still stood with her uncle, she let out a sigh, he was gone. Uncle John and Trevor were now hitching the mules. Aria pulled Mary back up against the wagon.

“I was only spying to see who he is and what my uncle was talking to him about, if you must know,” Aria said with her hand on her hip and her eyebrow creasing at the bridge of her nose.

Mary wrapped her hands around her middle, and her melodic laughter rang out. “Aria, you don’t fool me one bit, I watched you pressing the wrinkles out of your dress and the way your eyelashes batted when you were watching them. Admit it, you’re smitten.”
Shonda Czeschin Fischer is a wife and mother of 2 who has been married for 21 years to her husband Craig. She has worked alongside her husband Craig in children’s ministry for 17 years. Shonda loves reading, reviewing books, writing and anything that has do with history.
