"He tipped his hat and said, “Good afternoon, miss. I’m Sheriff Quint Steele. May I be of any assistance? It appears you’re waiting for someone.”

Amanda smiled and said, “Yes, I am. I’m waiting for my fiancé, but I arrived a day early. Perhaps he didn’t get my telegram.”

“Your fiancé? Congratulations. If you tell me his name, maybe I can send my deputy after him and let him know you’ve arrived.”

“Oh, thank you,” Amanda replied. “His name is Cyril Reymond, and he owns a ranch close to town.”

The smile fell from the sheriff’s face, and a frown took its place. “We should sit down and discuss this. I assume you’re here in answer to his mail-order bride ad?”

Amanda nodded and sat back down on the bench.

“He’s not dead or injured, is he?” Amanda stammered.

Sheriff Steele shrugged. “Not to my knowledge, but you should know a few things before meeting Cyril Reymond.”

Amanda nodded again.

The sheriff began to explain. “Cyril Reymond owns a saloon several miles from here. It sits closer to Cheyenne than it does to Prairieville and has quite a reputation. Nothing that anyone has been able to prove, but rumor has it he sends for mail-order brides, convinces them that he has a huge ranch not too far from town, and that she can stay there safely until the traveling preacher comes around. He runs ads using several local communities where the women have arrived. Too many disappearing from the same town would be suspicious. He doesn’t always come in person. More often than not, he sends one of his men, who claims he’s the ranch foreman. But, of course, most people don’t report a missing mail-order bride. We have a preacher here in town, but Reymond is a fast talker and spirits the women out of town nearly as soon as they set foot in town. You’re fortunate you arrived a day early.”

My passion is writing. When I am not writing, I am reading or watching sunsets. I have been writing short stories since I was in elementary school. Most were in the form of essays relating real-life events. Many were purely imaginary trips to magical places and times. I enjoy making up stories about people I meet or see on the street. My imagination runs wild and free. Besides my novels and companion short stories, I have self-published a book of children’s stories I used to tell to my granddaughter, Brittney, and two books of supernatural short stories.

I have been reading and loving supernatural stories and mysteries since I picked up my first Nancy Drew book. I also read all the Hardy Boy books I could find. I am a fan of Stephen King, Wendy Corsi Staub, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Agatha Christie. I also have a romantic side that is drawn to the mail-order bride stories of the 1800s.

I write cozy mystery, supernatural mystery, and Western Historical romance.

I love spring, summer, and starlight, but ice and snow make my dislike list. I have two children and two grandchildren who are the joys of my life.

Women on the run! But from what? Will they need rescuing? Or, will these intrepid heroines have the faith and the strength to rescue themselves while finding their ultimate reward? True love!

Now, with the large knife she used to chop vegetables for Hannah’s soup in her hand, Anja all but froze as she listened to the approach of heavy footsteps.

Frau Schmitt, leave your stove and join you husband up front. You can polish glasses. I need to speak with Fräulein Meyer.”

Hannah Schmitt, without saying a word, tapped the handle of her wooden spoon against the edge of her stockpot before setting it next to the stove. She exited the kitchen.

Fräulein Meyer, the nurse we hired to watch the children did not work out.”

Keeping her gaze on the wooden cutting surface where she had been chopping carrots, Anja held the knife in place as she dipped her chin to acknowledge his statement.

“Look at me when I speak to you!” Volume raised, Herr Kleist, standing at the end of the counter so he was at a right angle to Anja, grabbed the counter edges with both hands as he leaned toward her.

Anja jerked her head up and twisted her neck to meet her employer’s gaze. Usually, it is expected of a peasant to show deference by keeping their eyes on the ground. She could smell the alcohol on his breath, and it was not beer.

“There is no one to watch our grandsons. Frau Kleist has asked me to bring you back to the nursery. But, I do not know if I want you to leave the kitchen. If you wish for me to agree to letting you work as a nurse again, I expect something in return.” Herr Kleist released his grip on the counter and began to sidle around the edge toward Anja. “You understand what I am telling you? When I tell you to come to me, you will come, and you will give me what I want.” His gaze focused on her bosom, he slowly lifted a hand.

Anja understood all too well what he meant. “Nein, Herr Kleist. I will not be your Hure.” I did not come to America to be any man’s whore. “I prefer to stay in the kitchen.” Without loosening her grip on the knife handle, she dropped both hands to her sides and stepped back.

“I own you. You will do what I say.” The man, his hands outstretched, lunged for Anja.

Her breaths coming in gasping heaves, Anja grunted out cries of distress through parted lips as she sought to block the man’s attack with her arm. As he pressed toward her, she stumbled backward until her backside collided with the baking hutch. As soon as she felt him grab handfuls of skirt, she crossed her arms chest high and pushed with all her might. She heaved a breath of relief when he stumbled back.

“You will pay for that, Fräulein.” His elbow bent and his fingers tightly closed, he drew his arm back.

Mathilda exited and turned, waving goodbye as the train moved on without her. Determined not to linger on her fears, she spun around and looked right into the eyes of the most handsome man she’d ever seen. He wore the uniform of a police officer.

His dirty blond hair was curling slightly under his hat, which he tipped. “Ma’am,” he said. “Welcome to Midway.”

“Thank you,” she said softly, feeling very shy. Mathilda looked quickly around, then bit her lip. “I…I wonder if you could help me. I’m afraid I’m a bit lost. I just arrived, and I’m looking for Logan Fitzwick. I’m here to be his mail-order bride.”

The man looked at her, stunned. “My what?”

“Mail-order bride,” Mathilda repeated, her cheeks flaming. “I wired, and…” she stopped. It was a mistake. She knew it was. “You are Mr. Fitzwick?”

The man shook his head. “I’m sorry. Yes. I’ve been expecting you. I just wasn’t expecting someone as pretty as you are.” He eyed her critically. “What’s wrong with you? Why are you a mail-order bride?”

Stunned, Mathilda froze. She was bursting with embarrassment, but somehow she channeled her sister’s practiced haughtiness. “I beg your pardon? I’ve had a long journey. Perhaps the question is what’s wrong with you, that you had to order a mail-order bride?”

Sarah Lamb is the mother of two boys and wife to a teacher. She spends her days writing and editing books in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley.

Micah recognized Josie before she stepped down, rushing to help her. When their eyes met, they both stood frozen for a moment.

“Josie?” he asked as he took her hand.

She nodded as her smile radiated brighter than the sun itself. “Micah?”

Forgetting manners and propriety, Micah took her in his arms and lifted her down off the step, taking his time about releasing her on the platform. They stood there and stared at each other, holding
hands, while Diane quickly nudged Mark to help her ma off the train
steps.

“Josie,” Micah swallowed hard. “You are much more beautiful than I imagined.”

She blushed. “Thank you, Micah.” Breaking her eyes away from his, she glanced at the flowers.

He hadn’t even remembered them until that moment. “Oh, these are for you. And I guess I need to see about your luggage and get you off this platform. I’m sure you are exhausted from your trip,
but I have my brother and sister-in-law here with me. I hope you don’t mind. We hoped to take you and your ma to supper.”

Still, they stood looking at each other, until Diane and Mrs. Griffin walked up to them.

“Micah, this is Mrs. Griffin, and you must be Josie.” She broke their trance when she pulled Josie into a tight hug.

Micah started coming back to his senses and greeted Mrs. Griffin, as Diane started moving them toward the buggy.

Mark had retrieved their luggage and was starting to load it when Micah noticed and hurried to help him. “Isn’t she beautiful, Mark?”

Mark smiled at him. “Yes, she is, brother. You did good. Now let’s hope she is as taken with you as you apparently are with her.”
