“Louise, these children are dear to me. I also trust their instincts. As much as I need a mother for them, and you must need a marriage since you are here, I want you to know that until the preacher comes, you’re on a kind of probation.”
“Probation?” Louise asked, raising her eyebrows in surprise. Did people do that?
“What about you?” Louise asked, curious about his comment. “You don’t want a bride for…” her cheeks blazed and she glanced at her shoes.
There was a long silence and when she looked up, she was surprised to see Jake’s face was also heated. “I do want a bride,” he said, “but seeing those children are cared for is my first concern.”
“That’s very thoughtful and wonderful of you,” Louise said.
“No,” Jake said, and his face darkened. “It’s the right thing to do, because I’ve been selfish. I’m trying to make amends before it’s too late.”
Now it was Louise’s turn to search his face. “Selfish?” she asked. She could tell that Jake was struggling, wanting to say something, but he was preventing himself. Finally, he answered.
“We all have secrets,” he said with a tight smile. “It’s my experience that some mail-order brides have them as well.”
Louise sucked in her breath. Did he know? He didn’t seem to see her response though, as he continued, “I don’t know a lot about you yet, Miss…Louise. But I can tell you are a good woman.”
He turned and went down the stairs. Blinking a few times, Louise followed, a bit unsure what to make of the strange interaction. While it was true, she hadn’t known what to expect, a man with secrets of his own was unexpected.
Women on the run! But from what? Will they need rescuing? Or, will these intrepid heroines have the faith and the strength to rescue themselves while finding their ultimate reward? True love!
