Grant was aware of the desk clerk’s eyes following him as he paced back and forth in the lobby of the hotel, pulling his timepiece from his pocket every few minutes before casting an eye toward the staircase. What was keeping the blasted woman?

Finally, a young woman appeared at the top of the stairs, a half-smile tugging at her full red lips as she rested one slim hand on the balustrade and made her descent. He tucked her hand into the crook of his elbow. “I am happy to see you do not favor your brother in the slightest. Now come. The preacher is waiting and grandmama is most anxious to meet you.”
