Since she could not clearly see the man above, she turned to the person beside her. Confusion filled her. Was she looking into a mirror?

The young woman in the red dress looked from the man above to her. “Ja, Pappa. I saw her, too. I was just looking to find you—”

Missus Soderlund entered the room in a rush. “Ja, Alrik. You see her?”

Everyone stared at her. And no wonder. The girl next to her looked just like her. Same size. Same face. Same blond hair. Same blue eyes. Except that she wore a nicer dress. A delicate silver chain hung around her neck with a silver pendant that held a sparkling diamond in its center. And eyeglasses. Who was this girl?

“Where are your glasses?”

Who was he speaking to? She looked from the mirror-image woman next to her to Missus Soderlund. They simply looked back. Was the man asking her? She peered up toward him but could not tell where his eyes looked. “Glasses?”

“Algot.” The man above spoke. “Give her your eyeglasses.”

The young woman next to her hesitated. Then, slowly, she reached up with both hands and worked her eyeglasses from behind her ears and off her nose. She held them out.

Confused, Dagmar looked at the other three people one at a time. They all seemed to be looking at and waiting on, her.

She slipped the book with the black leather cover into the pocket on the side of her dress, then reached out and gently took the eyeglasses. Fitting them over her ears and onto her nose, she adjusted them to feel right. When she removed her hands, she could see the man above with new clarity. She gazed up at him.

A middled aged man in brown trousers and a white shirt leaned on the railing and peered down at her with gray-blue eyes. A handsome man, his chestnut hair, graying at the temples, framed his square face and rigid jaw. “Remarkable.”
