The door opened, but all she could see was the top of his cowboy hat. She heard him stomping the snow off his boots, then coming closer as he joined the men.
“Hello, Father; Mr. Mercer.”
“Hello, son. Did you get everything taken care of? You’ve been gone three days.”
“Yes, sir. It was slow going because of the weather, but we shouldn’t have any more trouble, at least not out of that group.”
“Hmm,” Mr. Cantrell rubbed his mustache. “Sounds as though there is more to tell. How about an earlier supper and we can get on home, out of this weather?”
Layla had gathered her purchases and was moving toward the counter to pay the proprietor, hoping to get a good look at this man; and a good look she certainly got.
He turned swiftly, running into her hard enough to knock everything from her hands and almost knocked her over. He grabbed her arm to steady her while he began apologizing profusely.
“Ma’am, I’m so sorry. Are you alright?”
“Yes, I’m fine, sir. Don’t fret yourself, I can pick everything up.”
“Nonsense, I made the mess, now, are you sure you’re alright?” He straightened and looked at her. His mouth went dry as he looked into the face of a beauty he hadn’t met yet. Long blonde hair, green eyes that were sparkling like emeralds, shapely figure, and cute when she blushed.
He took her hand gently. “I am so sorry and embarrassed over the way we are meeting.”
“I’m fine, really.” She gently removed her hand from his.
“I am Edward Cantrell, and you are?”
“Layla.” She watched as his piercingly blue eyes widened. He was a handsome man with broad shoulders and black hair, standing almost six feet. He had given an accurate description of himself, but not near as detailed as the man who stood before her.
“Layla Hammond by chance?”
She blushed again, looking downward. “Yes. I wanted to come out here and meet you myself without being a burden or obligation of any sort.”
Her blush deepened and her hand tingled as he kissed it tenderly, feeling it all the way up her arm and down her spine.

Lynne Lanning has such an effortless way of evoking emotion from her readers. Her characters are so realistic that the reader can feel their pain during trials and their joy during triumphs. Reviews state: "...it's as if Mrs. Lanning lived through this herself." "Couldn't put it down..." "A real page turner."
Lynne enjoys turning history and her love of God into enjoyable, relatable stories with practical life lessons that can benefit people today. Each story tells of true bonds of love and loyalty, mixed with tough times and decisions, with a twist of humor and sometimes devastation...the same is true in life. With a blend of her own family members and heritage along with lots of fiction, it's hard to tell where reality stops and fantasy begins.
Women on the run! But from what? Will they need rescuing? Or, will these intrepid heroines have the faith and the strength to rescue themselves while finding their ultimate reward? True love!
